There's the English and the food and of course the baseball.

But these days, the best acclimatization, the one thing Chien-Ming Wang's most pleased he's gotten used to, is the driving.

”Now I know where I'm going," the Yankees pitcher from Taiwan said.

It's been seven years since the Yankees first brought the strapping 6-foot-3, 220-pound right-hander West. Wang, who starts Friday night against the Red Sox, was 20 and an amateur and four years from finding the sinker that's now made him essentially the Yankees' ace, a 19-game winner and Cy Young runner-up last year in just his second full major league season.

He has an almost absurdly unassuming manner, and a way that had him immediately at home in clubhouses half a world away from his home, and as it turns out, he's always at least looked like he knew where he was going.

Man of influence

"Wang is?" Derek Jeter asked, hearing that Time magazine recently tabbed Wang one of its Most Influential People in the World. Purposely mispronouncing "Wohng" as "Wang," as he has since the pitcher made the bigs, Jeter looked two lockers down, laughed, and said, "Wang's a big stud?"

"I just do my job, playing baseball," the 27-year old said.

He's certainly adept at that, 3-4 this year despite a bad hamstring taking the season's first month. But his job has become so much more, especially to a country whose two previous major-leaguers weren't nearly so accomplished.

"We hope he can open a path for us," China Times reporter Hung-Pin Lee said. "Because of him, we can introduce Major League Baseball to Taiwan and maybe one day introduce Major League Baseball to more Taiwanese."

The day of Wang's first start this year, the China Times put his picture on its front page -- from just under the masthead to the page's bottom with room for only one teeny column of copy. Lee said Taiwan stops during his outings, as everyone from grandmothers to Little Leaguers tune on TVs."No, no, maybe some people watch," Wang protested. "My mom and dad probably.":F T

Honoring his parents

That mom and dad are still very much a part of Wang's life, in a role unchanged by neither fame nor America. As is Taiwanese custom, Wang and his wife live with his parents, in the same small Tainan City home he was raised in, during the off-season. His income dwarfs whatever their family business making chopsticks nets, but Wang still defers to his parents' counsel, and he's fiercely protective of them.

Last summer, after telling a New York reporter the parents who'd raised him had actually secretly adopted him from a couple he thought to be his aunt and uncle, the Taiwanese media went into a frenzy, putting his family under siege, paparazzi-style. Censuring Taiwanese reporters for the "harassment," Wang issued an edict saying he'd no longer speak to them, and the story ultimately only highlighted his belovedness.

The president of the Taiwanese Baseball Writers Association immediately offered a mea culpa, admitting to "unprofessionalism" and "abuse," and the Taiwanese people, Lee said, "were mad at the media. They say, 'Reporters, you are bad. You must respect Chien-Ming.' "

Of course, this isn't blind adoration for a countryman doing good. The Taiwanese see what the Yankees have and what New York fans are just starting to -- that Wang, as Jeter said, "is just a good dude."

Wang's funny and fun-loving.

As spokesman of the 2009 World Games, to be held in Taiwan, he donned a tux and did the tango for a commercial. He sighs about the Taiwanese dishes he misses and his wife's inability to make them, before quickly saying in his quiet voice: "But she's a good cook. Please write she's a good cook."

He likes walking around New York City ("nobody knows me") and he loves living in Edgewater ("everything there"). He jokes about his inability to play basketball ("very ugly") and his proclivity for ground ball outs ("good for my teammates to work"). And he shyly admits how moved he was when Robinson Cano insisted Wang teach him how to say "brother" in Taiwanese.

Every day is a fun day

That the Yankees do bank so much on Wang is in no small part because of his personality. Manager Joe Torre said he's the most even-tempered starter he's ever known, and catcher Jorge Posada agreed, saying, "Every day is the same for him -- fun." The catcher flat-out laughed when asked if Wang ever mentioned the change-up he called that broke up his perfect game in the eighth inning May 5.

"Wang? He didn't even know he had a perfect game," Posada said, remembering how the pitcher kept wondering why no one in the dugout would talk to him that afternoon. Manufactured or not, that obliviousness ensures Wang suffers no pressure as a beacon, for the injury-ravaged Yankees or his Wang-crazy countrymen.

And hey, it's gotten him here. And it'll surely take him wherever it is he's going.
